Jesse Williams. Modern Day Activist
I clearly have been hiding under a rock.
I thought I knew about all of Jesse Williams’ speeches and commentary on the #blacklivesmatter movement, but I did some research and I was behind.
First off, I've always been a fan of what Jesse had to say, nodding my head in agreement and saying "yes" out loud when he said something I've been wanting to.
The turning point, when I really wanted to hear every single thing he's said publicly, was after he stood in front of an audience of Black people telling us that we too need to be aware of how we are letting society control our lives. He also talked about how one of the first steps to making a change is admitting that we need to do more than agree that society is failing us, we need to actually figure out ways to use our platforms to do something about it.
I found one of my favorite Jesse Williams knowledge-dropping moments on YouTube, where he talks about how media portrays us to others in society, why people choose to be racist and once again how we as the Black race need to use our different platforms to educate and change the negative view people have about us.
You'll see an entire log of interviews on YouTube if you search "Jesse Williams activism".
He talks a lot about race and double standards, the depiction of Michael Brown, and the basic desire not to be wrongfully killed without there being justice or consequences.
Jesse's speeches are extremely compelling and aren't for one particular race to hear. He is talking to everyone; EVERYONE has a part in how everyone is being treated.
I won't restate everything that Jesse has spoken about, but I will ask you to open up your eyes, ears, and most importantly your hearts so that we can all try to understand one another.
