My 3rd Half Marathon Experience
I waited until the absolute last minute to schedule myself for this half marathon that I ran on Thanksgiving day. I procrastinated until I couldn’t procrastinate anymore and it wasn’t because I didn't want to do it, it was because this was the first time that I was running a half marathon by myself. I've run other races by myself but there was something about running a half marathon alone that gave me a bit of nervousness. However, I overcame the weird feelings, practiced, and ran the damn thing on Thanksgiving morning with no real issues at all.
Firstly, I would like to say thank you to my super last minute running buddy Oliver, a super amazing run coach and encouragement specialist. Every Sunday for about 6 weeks we ran long distance, increasing the mileage by one mile every time.
Secondly, I would like to say thank you to my knees and feet for not acting up on the day of the race.
Thirdly, thanks to my closest friends who gave me positive encouragement.
...and lastly I would like to thank all the people who think that I'm absolutely CRAZY for running so much (did it on 'em)!
What I did realize is that procrastination was key in actually prepping for my run because I could not make an excuse to not run those dreadful long distances. Procrastination was not key in picking a race because I will probably never run the one I ran ever again without a partner (ok maybe not never but it was very challenging).
There were so many hills and I was so over it. I started counting hills and once I got to the 5th hill I wanted to punch someone which is probably why I would need to run with a friend (to control my temper because I was pissed that the course map did not describe in detail how DIFFICULT this half marathon actually was).
I actually like the idea of running races on "holidays". It is a way to make sure that I am always doing something and a way to get my family and friends involved in doing something on the morning of the holiday! Sleep is for the weak! Lol.
Just writing this article is getting me very excited for my 4th half marathon in 2017. I always run my half marathon in a different city so this time I really cannot procrastinate on choosing which race.
